Azari Dance

2016

Stills from video "Azari Dance"

Exhibited during a screening at Bildmuseet

The video work "Azari Dance" is a collaboration with my sister. We had found a video from our parents' wedding where our mother dressed in a traditional Azerbaijan folk costume and was dancing for our father. We found the suit and wanted to try to recreate the dance in our time, in Sweden. In the video we made it is her second attempt to copy our mother's steps and there is a great deal of seriousness in her expression. This expression falls apart farther in to the dance when she happens to stumble and a smiles while doing so. There is a limbo state between two times, worlds and generations.
